Lacey and Larkin — Hunger Strikes and Freedom Pains
Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin are famous for their classic approach to fighting for immigrant rights. They published a newspaper to national acclaim and received backlash from local authorities. Today, they are still fighting for freedom by supporting leaders around the country with their hands held high in victory. The fight lives on and justice will be won.
As the tumultuous year of 2017 came to a close, Dreamers – immigrants who came to America as young children – saw a dimming hope for their future. Thanks to new legislation passed by the Trump administration, Dreamers would now be stripped of their rights and deemed illegal aliens. Soon, many were on their way to being deported.
For many in the United States, this spelled outrage. Many immigrant rights activist groups protested and spoke out against the unconstitutional bill and called for it to be repealed. The aftermath saw families broken and lives destroyed. “Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free…” reads the inscription on The Statue of Liberty. For a country with so much to offer and such a lofty message, it’s no wonder America has become the default safe-haven for immigrants. Within our gates of freedom, anyone can build a better life than the one they previously lived.
Michael Lacey, Jim Larkin, Erika Aniola, and the Frontera Fund are fighting everyday to protect the rights of immigrants in the United States. They have made it their mission to provide an even battleground for those huddled masses who arrive beaten, broken, and tired. Thanks to leaders like them, the United States is a better place. Unfortunately, the Trump administration seeks to weed out and eliminate any semblance of freedom that America stands for. They want to eradicate anyone who does not fit into their structured demographic. This is not the American way. Stand up for freedom. Fight with the Frontera Fund.
