Instead, Richard DeVaul refers to diversity as having a mixture of acquired and inherent traits in the workforce. DeVaul points that companies that achieve more innovation are more diverse compared to their peers. Furthermore, he points out that several global surveys have supported that diversity and innovation go hand in hand.
DeVaul believes that any business leader who seeks to drive their company in the path of innovation must create an enabling environment to spur inclusivity. He points out that companies cannot achieve true innovation even when a diverse workforce exists, but there is no inclusivity. Richard DeVaul states that all employees must feel that their opinion is important and respected in a diverse work environment. He believes that what spurs innovation in diverse workgroups is that the employees in such environments will often scrutinize their opinions and viewpoints more critically as they are aware other opinions can be taken as alternatives.
In contrast, a homogenous workgroup is complacent and often characterized by a lack of critical analysis of viewpoints and uniformity of thoughts, stifling innovation. DeVaul points out research studies and surveys have supported diversity as an essential driver of innovation, performance, and competitive advantages.
